Simon Says Stamp - Sunny Vibes Release Blog Hop, Day 2

Updated: 5 days ago

Hi Lovelies!

Welcome to Day 2 of Simon Says Stamp's Sunny Vibes Release Blog Hop! This card is all about our Exquisite Hummingbird, but we are going to have some fun along the way with creating an arched shaker frame with an embellished background.

Most of the effort for me was about coloring the delicate hummingbird and I used a reference photo from a Google search to pick the colors and guide the ink-blending. I get a little nervous when I am trying to reproduce any thing from nature - flowers, animals, a landscape. Having a reference takes the pressure of choosing the colors alone and I just focus on finding a close match using my ink swatches.

Sometimes I plan and sketch my cards and then make them. Here, I started with the idea that I wanted to use the Hummingbird and Nested Framed Arches frame and ended up with a Shaker Card.

Why don't we get started then by reviewing the key supplies for today's cards, I ended up using.

Supplies are linked in the Supplies Section at the end of this post. Check out the entire Sunny Vibes release by clicking the image below:

I'm hoping this card is as good as this hug!

CARD WALKTHROUGH

EXQUISITE HUMMINGBIRD

  • Die-cut 110lb white cardstock using the Exquisite Hummingbird die

  • Ink-blend the hummingbird die-cuts with a blending brush as shown using the inks pictured

  • Once the stamp is attached to the MISTI lid, ink with the warm Distress Ink colors, starting with the lightest and then adding the darker colors to limit cross contamination

  • Once generously inked, mist 2-3 times with water and immediately stamp onto the cardstock pressing evenly to get full coverage but not too hard to smoosh the stamp image

  • Set the stamped image aside to dry

  • Repeat these steps for the warm trio of Distress Ink colors

ASSEMBLY

  • Use Craft Glue to adhere the inked Hummingbird die-cut layers

  • Note: I re-inked the beak here just before attaching to the body because I wanted it a little darker, but this is optional and you may prefer the lighter color

  • To position the wings, place the assembled body on the Simon Says Stamp Exquisite Hummingbird die packaging and then align the wing layers with the picture beneath it and adhere

  • Apply 0.25 Inch Scor-Tape to the back of the Hummingbird

ICELAND POPPIES

  • The images on the top left and right below show the pieces of each of the two poppies in this set.

ARCHES

  • Use the 2nd largest Nested Domed Arches FRAMES to die-cut Simon Says Stamp Orange Peel Cardstock and create the orange arched frame

  • Use the 3rd largest Nested Domed Arches (not the frames!) to die cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" piece of white cardstock to create an opening for the shaker

TIN ROOF BACKGROUND

  • Stamp a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of vellum with Simon Says Stamp Clear Ink after dusting with using the Brush Powder Tool to reduce static.

  • Check to ensure that you have good coverage of the clear ink stamped onto the vellum, re-stamp if needed

  • Pour WOW Embossing Powder METALLIC SILVER REGULAR over the stamped pattern, dust off excess and heat set

  • Ink-blend Lemonade and Sherbet Pawsitively Saturated inks onto the back of the embossed panel as shown

  • Apply 0.25 Inch Scor-Tape to the perimeter of the vellum

SENTIMENT

  • Stamp the selected sentiment from the Just Breathe Stamp Set in Simon Says Stamp Intense Black onto the Simon Says Stamp Orange Peel Cardstock

  • Die-cut with the coordinating outline die from the Just Breathe Die Set

  • Apply 0.25 Inch Scor-Tape to the back of the sentiment

SHAKER CARD ASSEMBLY

  • Get the white Domed Arches Card Front that you created and a 4" x 5 1/4" piece of Simon Clear Acetate Sheet

  • Apply 0.25 Inch Scor-Tape to the back of the Card Front

  • Adhere the Acetate to the back of the Card Front to create th top of the Shaker

  • Apply Foam Tape to the back of the Card Front

  • Adhere the ink-blended, patterned vellum to a Card Base

  • Place a generous amount of sequins on top of the vellum avoiding the edges of the card where the foam tape will be

  • Adhere the Domed Arches Card Front over the sequins on the Card Base to create the Shaker

DECORATING THE SHAKER

  • Adhere the orange Domed Arches Frame die-cut around the opening of the shaker element on the Card Front

  • Apply a little Craft Glue to the stem of the Iceland Poppies and let dry for about 45 seconds so that it is less liquid when applied to the acetate and reduces smudging the glue onto the acetate

  • Position and adhere the assemble Iceland Poppies as shown below

  • Apply a little Craft Glue to the beak of the Exquisite Hummingbird and let dry for about 45 seconds

  • Position and adhere the assemble Iceland Poppies as shown below

  • Adere the sentiment and Mermaid Tail sequins with Craft Glue to finish

To me a Shaker Card is all about the "shakety bits" and these Mermaid Tail Sequins deliver!

This card is so busy that choosing a very simple sentiment works well so that it does not compete with the shaker elements and the end result is the intended comforting paper hug.

Our gorgeous Hummingbird should cheer anyone up and hopefully evoke some relaxing tropical, sunny vibes

Just one quick note before I go, I kept the flowers white because there is so much color everywhere else. If you prefer to color the flowers, I would suggest keeping the vellum un-colored.

These cards have a few steps to put them together but the techniques are simple and the end result should definitely make your recipient smile!
